A deck is only as good as the frame under it

Nearly every rotten deck we take out failed from underneath. The boards on top looked tired, but the real problem was a subframe sat flat on soil with no airflow, no fall and joists spaced too far apart, so it held water and started flexing years before anyone noticed.

We build the frame first and properly: levelled, sat on solid bearings rather than bare ground, ventilated underneath so air moves through, and joisted at the right centres for the board being laid. Then the boards go on with the correct expansion gaps, screwed or clipped down so nothing lifts or squeaks in summer.

Composite is what most people go for now — no staining, no sanding, no annual coat of decking oil — usually with black aluminium balustrades, matching steps and integrated lighting. We still lay plenty of pressure-treated timber too. Recent decks in Tan-y-Fron, Abenbury, Rhosllanerchrugog and Coedpoeth.

The Build

How we build a deck

Four stages, and the two that matter most are buried under the boards.

  • Old deck out and ground prepped

Rotten timber and frame lifted and carted away, ground cleared, weeded and membraned before anything new goes down.

  • Level, ventilated subframe

Frame set on solid bearings, levelled, and joisted at the right centres with airflow underneath so it stays dry.

  • Boards laid with correct gaps

Composite or timber boards fixed down with the expansion gaps the manufacturer specifies, so nothing bows or lifts.

  • Balustrades, steps and lighting

Balustrades and handrails fitted, steps built, fascias and skirting closed in, lighting wired and the site cleared.

Questions

Decking questions we get asked

Anything not covered here, just ring and ask.

How much does composite decking cost in Wrexham?

It depends on the size of the deck, the height off the ground, and how much balustrade, steps and lighting you want — a raised deck needs far more frame and support than one sitting near ground level. Composite board costs more than timber up front but you never buy stain or spend a weekend sanding it.

We measure on site and give you a free written quote with the boards, balustrade and frame listed out.

Composite or timber decking — which should I choose?

Composite doesn't rot, splinter, warp or need oiling, holds its colour, and is the better bet if the deck is in shade or gets a lot of use. It costs more to install.

Timber is cheaper up front and looks warmer and more traditional, but it needs cleaning and re-treating every year or two and it will eventually need boards replacing. Both are fine — it's mostly budget and how much maintenance you want.

Does composite decking get slippery or hot?

Quality composite boards have a grooved or embossed surface and grip well, including in wet weather — usually better than old smooth timber that's gone green. Like any dark surface it warms up in direct summer sun, so if the deck is in full sun all day a lighter board is worth considering. We'll go through the options with you.

Can you lay new boards on my existing deck frame?

Only if the frame is genuinely sound, and often it isn't. We'll lift a few boards and look at the joists, the bearings and the ventilation underneath. If it's solid and at the right centres for the new board, re-decking it saves you money and we'll say so.

If the frame is rotten, sat on soil or spaced too wide, laying expensive boards on it is throwing money away — we'd rather rebuild it than warranty someone else's mistake.

Do you fit balustrades, steps and deck lighting?

Yes, all as part of the same job. Powder-coated aluminium balustrades and handrails in matching colours, deck steps with the risers set even, fascia and skirting boards to close the frame in, and low-voltage LED lighting run into the deck or the balustrade posts.

Do you take the old decking away?

Yes. Lifting out the old boards, frame and any concrete or rubble underneath is included in the quote, and it all goes off site. The area is cleared and swept before we hand it back — no skip needed.
