The job
What we did in Johnstown
The front lawn had stopped being a lawn. A mature blossom tree sat right in the middle of it, taking most of the light and dropping onto the grass all season, and what was left had dried out to bare patches. It was being mown for no real return.
The tree came down and the stump and roots came out with it. The old turf was stripped off, the ground levelled and compacted, and a weed membrane laid across the whole area before any stone went down. Skipping the membrane is what causes these areas to green over within two years.
Plum slate was laid over the top and held in place with a brick edge set against the path. It needs no mowing and no feeding, and the plum colour deepens rather than washes out when it rains, which matters on a front garden that faces the road.
