Contemporary slatted fence in Summerhill
Planed all round battens set with consistent 15mm gaps — a modern slatted screen that lets wind through.

What we did in Summerhill
Slatted fencing is the contemporary alternative to a solid panel, and it has a practical advantage as well as a visual one: the gaps let wind pass through instead of pushing against a solid face, so it is far less likely to be taken out in a gale.
Planed all round battens were used rather than rough sawn, which is what gives it the clean, finished look — rough timber never reads as modern no matter how well it is spaced.
The 15mm gaps were kept consistent across the whole run. On slatted work that consistency is the entire job; an uneven gap is visible from the other end of the garden. It also keeps the fence pet-friendly, being too narrow for a dog to get through.
